When caught cheating, consequences are indeed unpleasant and even dramatic sometimes. Who wouldn't feel angry, betrayed or stupid? There is a whole range of feelings that one experiences when discovering that the spouse is cheating. A legitimate question concerns what chances exist for a family to stay together after such an episode. Hard to tell, since lots of things will never be the same again.
Some people prefer putting some distance or giving some space to the other so as to let the dust settle after being caught cheating.
