It's not unusual to see a dog behave like a human, usually during inconvenient times. Many, whether dog owner or not, see dogs as almost like humans because they feel a wide range of emotions too and deserve to be loved. The knowledge gained from studying the moods, likes, and dislikes of dogs make animal portraits a success.
To show that he does not want to have a picture taken of him, a dog would bark at the wrong moment or not prick up his ears. He could choose to give the portrait artist a hard time by being a distraction. To secure an interesting, arrestive pose, the dog must be a little startled, his attention held by something which catches his sense of sound rather than his sense of smell. When a dog gets a whiff of a scent, it would usually extend its neck and create an undesirable pose, but when a dog is startled mildly, it would stand straight and prick up its ears.
Taking pictures of your dog is best done early in the morning before he feeds so that he is bright and alert. Dogs who are hungry are more alert and can do the poses immediately. It is cooler in the morning, so the dog feels cool as well and will not pant as much as when it has already played later on in the day. A fatigued dog makes a poor subject, and a dog with his mouth open is not looked upon with favor, with the exception of two breeds, the German Shepherd and the Saint Bernard.
It is because of one detail that you can say that dog photographers' studios and the studios of radio broadcasting stations share something in common. Every kind of sound effect you can imagine is there, ready for use in case one sound effect fails. Sounds available include bird calls, pop guns, and duck quacks.
A breeder is expectant to see a perfect form and excellence in how his dog is featured in the proofs of the portrait. There is something different between a sketcher's work and a dog photographer's. What an artist can see, not what he knows, is what he includes when he draws a picture. On the other hand, a photographer makes an effort to include what he knows should be in the picture and not just what is visible to him.
Make sure the length of a daschund's body is exaggerated. In the case of most breeds, their feet should be planted firmly on the ground and their bodies should be slight tilted for the shot. The German boxer is the most sophisticated of breeds. He is often friendly with humans but is liable to be antagonistic where other dogs are around.
It usually slips the minds of the amateur photographers to photograph dogs when they are hungry because photographing them would be easier. Once satisfied from being fed before or during the process, the subjects will feel lazy and disinterest, much the photographer's disappointment. The pose would not be a challenge for the dog if he is attentive.
When posing a dog, photographers would often require the absence of the breeder. Pet owners can make quite a scene when they want their dog to feel comfortable, just like a nervous mother, and it is for this reason that photographers do this. The dog is already aware of the tricks his owner employs to get his attention, and this would not at all help. When exposed to different sound effects devised by a stranger, a dog would usually respond in the desirable manner.
