If you need or someone you love needs drug or alcohol addiction help, doing some research on the various facilities available is a good idea. Although it can be easy to make a snap decision in a moment of emotion, doing your homework to find a good addiction treatment center can often be the difference between relapse and recovery.
Although you will be going through detoxification and most likely having group sessions based on twelve-step programs, addiction treatment may not be what you expect. First of all, a good center will cater specifically to a certain gender or age group. If you are a young adult, it is best for you to go through recovery with others your own age. This experience often creates a tight-knit bond of community and friendship between residents. Having people your own age there with you is important because it can remind you that you are not alone in dealing with these issues. Personal difficulties happen at any age, and a person can get through them, too – no matter how young or old he is.
A good addiction treatment center will have staff made up of trained professionals who have also gone through addiction themselves and are living examples of recovery. You will never have to feel like anyone is looking down upon you or that they do not know how you feel, because they have all been there too. You will also have a lot of activities to do at the facility, and overall it may feel more like a college campus atmosphere than anything. There will be things to enjoy like sports, yoga, art and music classes, horseback riding and many more activities where you can either be with others or spend some time alone. You will still have some freedom and opportunities to make your own choices.
