If there is one treat my family asks for over and over that I don't mind indulging them in, it is frozen fruit smoothies. They are simple to make and are actually good for you. You can make these delicious cool drinks with just about any type of fruit or even combine different types of fruit. Let me explain exactly how to make a frozen fruit smoothie. It is quite simple.
To Make These Amazing Smoothies You Will Need:
First, let us talk about the hardware. You are going to need a blender. Almost any type of blender with a tight fitting lid will do. I enjoy making each family member their favorite smoothie with my magic bullet, a small blender that blends them one smoothie at a time. Of course regular blenders work just as well, plus you can make more servings at a time.
Our first ingredient will be of course frozen fruit. You can make frozen smoothies with just about any type of fruit and of course also combinations of fruit. Some simple ones to start with are strawberries, bananas and peaches.
Most of my favorite smoothies have a little yogurt in them. I like the tart flavor and it creates a nice smooth texture. Any type and flavor of yogurt can be used, including low non-fat yogurt. Another great option is thicker greek yogurt.
You will also need liquid of some sort to thin things down. Milk, water and juice are popular options. Add just enough liquid to get the smoothie to the consistency you like. I like to start with 2 parts frozen fruit, 1 part yogurt and 1 part liquid. A good example would be 2 cups frozen strawberries blended with 1 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt and 1 cup skim milk.
You may want to add a little less liquid to begin with and then add just enough more to get it to your favorite smoothie consistency. Optionally you can also blend some ice in there as well.
Let's Start Blending :
Let's talk about blending. Start by blending the fruit and yogurt a litlte, then add your liquid and blend away. If your blender has a pulsing function (most do) use it. It allows any larger piece of fruit to sink back down to the bottom and get chopped up. That way you will end up with a nice smooth smoothie.
If your blender starts working too hard, it's time to add a little more liquid to make sure everything moves around well.
If you are planning on using a good bit of ice in your smoothie, start by chopping it in your blender first before you add any of the fruit or yogurt. This will make sure everything combines well and that you don't end up with big ice chunks.
By the way, you don't have to stick to just frozen fruit in your smoothie. Feel free to mix both fresh and frozen fruits. For these frozen smoothies you can either buy fruit already frozen at the grocery store, or take your favorite fresh fruit and toss it in the freezer. It is very easy to freezer berries for example. Just put them in a freezer bag and freeze them whole.
Most of my frozen fruit smoothies contain frozen banana slices. Whenever you find yourself with a banana that's getting a little too ripe, peel it, and then slice it. The banana slices go into a freezer bag and are poped into the freezer until I am ready to use them in a smoothie. Adding them gives your smoothie a nice creamy texture and adds some sweetness as well.
