How To Select The Right Whey Protein

Author : Janey Robinson

Bodybuilders who build muscle and take up weight training need supplement. The most popular protein supplement available on the market today is whey protein. How one type of whey is different from the others? What is different and how will each of them benefit you?

First, it is important to emphasize that whey protein is supplement. Many people still think it is a replacement for meals, which is wrong. The best practice is to get various nutrients from the diet because the body needs different types of protein, and add whey protein to get enough daily supply for the body.

Along with scientific research and development, over the years there are many types of whey protein. Produced from milk, whey protein still contains high lactose, fat and cholesterol. Note that milk solids are composed of about equal amount of those. As it goes through the filtering process, it produces different quality of whey protein.

Whey protein concentrate (WPC) typically have 70 to 85 percent of protein. Whey protein isolate (WPI), on the other hand, contains higher amount of protein, about 90 percent. It is also easier to absorb by the body. As the amount of protein level decreases in concentrate, the amounts of fat and/or lactose increase.

That is still scratching the surface though. As time goes, manufacturers introduce other nutritious elements into their products. That's why, that and other factors like marketing, diversify the prices of the products available on the market. Whey protein also comes in a dozen or more favors, making it harder, or perhaps easier, to choose.

Whey protein isolate costs more than concentrate because of the filtering process during production. Because consumers begin to realize about the benefits of isolate, producers want to produce inexpensive protein while carrying the isolate label. One trick they've done successfully is to include enough isolate in the blend to legally label it as such.

Inexpensive whey products may contain fillers and cheap ingredients to increase volume. Because of the benefits mentioned above, it is recommended that you choose whey isolate, but it isn't necessary to pay for the price of full whey protein isolate. Look for a good blend. It will keep the cost down but supply enough macro nutrients you need. Nowadays the problem is not lack of choices, but time you need to do the research and find the right product that suits your need but doesn't cost you an arm and a leg.

Finally, before buying, you can often save quite a lot with certain brand of WPI. If as part of your supplement you also consume various vitamins to help the body absorb nutrients, some products already offer that included in one package. The benefit is, you don't have to pay separately.
