Sports have long been a mode for women to achieve independence and gender equality. Golf, in particular, developed as a sport for both men and women even from its inception. The sport was introduced into the United States as a country club activity, so it was used primarily as a way for young socialites to meet one another and to express wealth and class. This social aspect bred an interesting and distinct genre of golf fashion for both sexes. In fact, the linear development of ladies golf clothing may directly correlate with the rise of gender equality.
For many years, ladies golf clothing was not meant to improve performance in the game, but rather to express femininity and aid them in their social endeavors. Thus, long, bulky A-line skirts and tight sweaters were a popular choice. This did not create the right sort of aerodynamics for an optimum swing and the skirt often got in the way of the club. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that more ambitious athletes were able to see change.
The common twill outfits were replaced with knits and other materials that were more flexible and breathable. Shorter skirts and dresses were actually acceptable. By the 1960s, at the peak of the women’s liberation movement, even ladies golf pants and Bermuda shorts hit the green, but it wasn’t until the nineties that they became common wear. Now, golf apparel designers have taken to experimenting with bright colors and patterns, as well as new materials for women’s golf shirts that better absorb moisture to improve performance. This swift change in fashion not only offers more mobility for serious golfers, but it has also made a statement and engendered confidence and a sense of independence in its wearers.
Today, ladies golf apparel is a very specialized area of fashion that many notable designers, such as Nike and Adidas, participate in. In fact, many magazines and blogs now devote their attention to golf clothing trends as they would swimwear or formalwear. Golfers and no non-golfers may both benefit from the classy, confident appearance inherent with women’s golf shirts and the practical mobility of the skort).
