There’s something about a good business card that will never go out of fashion. Distinctive, sophisticated, succinct – they’re everything that business relationships ought to be, and as a result they’ve come to symbolise everything that is best about a company’s ability to communicate with its contacts. A good one performs the job of a talented envoy – a bad one can lose contracts. Printing business cards well, then, is imperative to the continued growth of any company. This is why a little care needs to be taken when designing the thing.

The oldest law of all design applies with special vehemence to the creation of business cards. Don’t let the person who wants the article, whatever it is, design it. There are rules that need to be followed in order to make a business card communicate effectively. Those rules are the first things to be trampled when a business owner starts trying to design his or her own card. They’re more concerned with getting every jazzy logo and every unimportant bit of information on the little piece of tree pulp, often with horrifyingly crowded results. Not good. When printing business cards is left to the professionals, a different story emerges – compact, concise, clear and attractive.

The basic rule of a good business card is the same as the first rule of good writing. Use only those words that communicate the necessary information and cut everything else out. That’s usually not possible for the future owner of the cards – he or she can’t bear to leave anything out, which generally makes self-designed business cards a complete mess. When the pros do the designing, all the extraneous detail is clipped off – leaving only the important information, presented beautifully in enough space that it can actually be read.

Printing business cards, then, is a bit of an art. Fortunately, most of the major UK printing services (the rather wonderful Mr Printerman is a prime example) offer varying levels of assistance at all stages of design. Customers can take advice on card size, font, material, colour and even the all-important inclusions and omissions. Deciding what information to cut from one’s cards can be well-nigh impossible: professional printing services, with years and even decades of experience in the field, are far better placed to advice than own-company employees.

So, what makes a good card? Well, when it’s time for printing business cards, the following question should be asked (and answered). Does the information on the card tell a potential client things he or she absolutely needs to know? A future business partner or customer only needs to know three things – what a company does, what the company is called, and who to contact within the company. As a result, the only words a card needs are: the company name; the company business, if the name doesn’t give that away; and the name and email/telephone number of a person within that company. Everything else is extraneous and should be cut.

Printing business cards is important. It generates new business and keeps old clients in the loop. Don’t leave it to chance – get some professional help!
