Author : S Gee

So we all know the delicious recipes that can be cooked up from the edible weed but what other uses can there be for such an irritating plant in your garden?

Known as the hu zhang, traditional Chinese methods have used Japanese knotweed for very effective medicinal methods, and today the plants potential for treating cancer and many other diseases is currently being investigated in western countries.
Chinese methods however, have been known to find isolated chemicals in the plant that are meant to act as antioxidants and antimutagens with cancer.

The plant is also used as a gentle laxative in large quantities and can be found in the plants leaves. Other uses are as a diuretic, in which the plant can be applied externally to sooth burns and skin lesions and apparently can work to stimulate blood circulation, clear heat and remove toxins. Although you can eat the stalks raw, there are so many delicious recipes to choose from there is every reason to make the healthy treat a tasty one.

The leaves of the Japanese knotweed plant can be crushed and applied externally as a remedy to help abscesses, cuts etc by enhancing immune system and cardiac functions, whilst the dried roots can be ground into a powder for other purposes. Interestingly is also used in the treatment of women's complaints, traumatic injuries, fevers and appendicitis.

Japanese knotweed also contains the wonder chemical Resveratrol. With the same claims that have been made about red wine and grape skins, resveratol has been praised for its ability to make people looking younger for a long period and has also been recommended for muscle growth, anti-aging, high energy level, heart ailments, diabetes, longevity, weigh loss and the like. By its successful stimulation of certain enzymes in the body, this health stimulant has also been the preferred choice of professional sportsmen and other health enthusiasts. Therefore, there’s no longer any need to live in Japan to live a healthy lifestyle. What a magical plant!

The wonders of this plant do not stop at medicine however. Besides the healthy properties of the plant, the roots are claimed to produce a yellow dye with a possibility that it could be used as a source of biomass for conversion to fuel. This of course would be carbon neutral and proves the many diverse uses for the once considered useless, invasive plant.
