Exercise For Dogs Using Really, Really Long Ropes

Author : Gail Ramberg

This is the truth. Dogs need to exercise. They should get exercise for the same health reasons that the rest of us do. If that is not enough of a reason for you to get motivated to get exercise for dogs, maybe this will help. A dog who does not get to exercise will have to invent ways to be active. 95% of the time, you won't be happy with what they come up with. Finding ways to get exercise for dogs is more of a problem if you don't have a big, fenced in back yard for them to run around in. However, there are other things you can do. Right now we will focus on getting exercise for dogs by using a really long "leash". I can help you get through the learning curve a little more quickly.

Using a rope like a long leash is a great way to get exercise for dogs. The dogs can wander around or you can play fetch. My 9 year old Lab really likes to go to a park or a sports complex. These places have a lot of room and we don't bother others. Having a rope vs. a leash means that the dog is mostly free to to whatever they want to.

Surprisingly, there are things you need to know if you are going to use a rope to get exercise for dogs.

Rope burns hurt. I could write a whole book about how to not get rope burns, but experience may be your best teacher.

Here are some hints to help bring down the learning curve.

exercise your dogs like this. This will help stop some issues because you can capture the attention of the dog before they see the other dog they want to run to, or a rabbit, or a fly etc. You do not want the dogs exercise to come from chasing stuff that they're not really supposed to chase.

Constantly know exactly where the rope is and what it's wrapped around. This is for both your safety and your dogs. If the rope is wrapped around your ankle and the dog runs off to chase the wind, it's going to be painful.

Another scenario that could crop up is the rope will get wrapped around something else. If this does happen, you won't know about it until the dog comes to a sudden stop. This hurts the dog... a lot.

Your hand should always be wrapped by the rope. If you just hold the rope loosely and runs after something... you won't be able to grab it firmly to stop them... and if you try, it will hurt.

Constantly know what's going on in your environment. You need to get exercise for dogs, but you also need for everyone to be safe. You have to see the stuff that will drive your dog crazy before they see it. Most of the time you can prevent the dogs from running away with a sharp and quick "no" or "come here". If they aren't convinced you should be able to "brace for impact" and gradually get the dog stopped.

It's not fair (or nice) to jerk the dog to a severe stop when they reach the end of their rope. Be prepared to take a couple steps toward where the dog is running to decrease the impact (to you and the dog).

Check the rope for weathering and get a new rope BEFORE it breaks. You do not want to see that the rope should be replaced after it breaks apart and your dog runs after something on the other end of the park. Getting exercise for dogs is supposed to fun for both of you and worrying about accidents isn't fun.

You need to stay in a remote area until everyone is a little more comfortable with this new process. That will give both of you a chance to "learn the ropes" (pun intended) and get some exercise and not having to worry about other animals and other people.

There are lots of ways to get exercise for dogs, you just have to be committed to go out and do it. Both of you will be glad you put forth the effort.

How bad were your rope burns when you attempted to do this?
