ALL FORMS OF EXERCISE ARE ALLOWED

Author : Wilson Day

There is no exercise that is excluded because of the band. You cannot hurt or move the band by exercise. The access port is under the skin and it can be tender in that region. Getting bumped there may be uncomfortable. But you cannot hurt the port itself. It is far too robust. The band itself is totally remote from any point of contact and cannot be damaged by any physical activity. Sometimes, when you are joining a gym and you tell them you have a LAP-BAND, the staff may be unsure of the limits placed on the band. They may even request a physician’s certificate to guide them about the implications. Please reassure them. There is nothing that can happen to the band or the port. There is no need for a certificate. Just get going.
Look for variety in what you do. Keep it interesting. Do some of those activities that you have missed because of your weight problem-a hike in the local national park, a bike ride, kicking the football with the kids, swimming or surfing at your local beach, horse riding. Remember that these activities are good in every way-good for the effectiveness of the band, good for your health, good for your quality of life and good fun. These include the things you missed out on because of your weight. Go for them now.
If you are limited in your activities by pain in the back, hips, knees or feet, look to the non-weight bearing exercises. Water aerobics and swimming are excellent activities.
If you can afford it, a personal trainer is invaluable, especially as you get started. The personal trainer should be able to evaluate your particular abilities, needs and interests. He or she can then establish reasonable goals, design a program of exercise that is optimal for you to reach those goals, and guide you in correct technique. Most importantly, the personal trainer provides the motivation to keep you reaching your goals.
