Most people think that all point-and-shoot cameras can only take pictures on automatic and it do not require any photography skills at all. However, being a professional or amateur photographer - you couldn't neglect the fundamentals of photography.

Therefore, taking good pictures can be possibly done by anyone who understands and practices these steps as follows:

1. Read the manual before you start taking snapshots

You have to spend some time to understand the functions of your newly bought compact digital camera including the settings and the advanced presets of the camera. If you bought a camera that has a few specific features that other cameras don't have - make sure you understand those features to ensure that your camera is worth the buy.

2. Start taking casual snapshots with your camera

This is most enjoying part - which you can take snapshots without actually bother at the quality of the image. That is the moment that you can make mistakes - or learn from your mistakes. Thus, you can take this opportunity to capture images under different conditions - in this case, you can test the advanced presets or shooting modes that allows you to take pictures in different conditions on automatic. Using the right advance preset or shooting during the photo-taking process able to produce well-balanced images in terms of getting a perfect blend of colors, contrast and brightness.

3. Let's get serious - applying the principles of photography

After taking casual snapshots with your camera - it's time to get serious by applying the photography basics including photo composition, lighting and ISO setting. In photo composition practice, you have to change the LCD display to gridlines or boxes - soon, you'll see the screen with nine equal blocks - three columns and three rows. Then, move your camera around until the subjects are positioned within these blocks. It can be enhanced if you play around with different angles or any position if you think it will look good in the picture.

It's important to have good sense of lighting - if you master it well, you can create all sorts of emotions by having shades on the subjects. On the other hand, adjusting the ISO setting is meant for taking clearer pictures under different conditions - ISO 400 for capturing images under dim conditions as well as taking pictures of fast moving subjects, and 800-1600 for capturing images outdoors.
