20 Of The Most Amazing Facts About Our Eyes

People have the tendency to forget exactly how important our eyes truly are. These are probably the most amazing facts that you are probably not aware of:

1. Your eye can detect over ten million different colours.
2. On average the human eye can distinguish between over 500 shades of grey.
3. Eyes are the most complex organs, apart from your brain. Eyes are composed of more than 2 million working parts more than any car.
4. An adult eye contains about 12 million light sensitive cells.
5. The clear cornea at the front of your eye is the only living tissue in the your body that does not contain any blood vessels.
6. The eye is the only part of the human body that can function at 100% ability at any moment without rest.
7. Given clear conditions your eye can discern candlelight at a distance of 21km. As long as there are no obstacles in between. Probably Netherlands the best place to try this out.
8. Men’s eyes are better suited to read small print. Men can read smaller print than women.
9. It is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open
10. Smoking cigarettes or cigars not only affects your health but also reduces your night vision
11. If you go blind in one eye you only loose about 20% of your total eye vision, not half.
12. Your visual field increases by 10% in the dark because your pupils are larger.
13. The average blink lasts 300-400 milliseconds.
14. Babies’ eyes don’t produce any tears until they are about 6-8 weeks old. They can’t even blink before the age of six months.
15. All babies are born colour blind
16. It can take children up to three years to attain their final eye colour.
17. Your eyes blink on average over 10 million times a year. It does of course depend on how long you life.
18. Over 80% of our memories are made up of visual images. Your eyes contribute 85% towards your total knowledge. In a normal life span your eyes will see almost 24 million images of the world around you.
19. We shed over 30 million eyelashes over our lifetime. Your eyelashes have an average life span of 5 months
20. Your eyes will never wear out and the lens inside the eye continues to grow throughout life

Make sure you look after your eyes, this amazing organ and have regular eye tests. Visit your local optician and book an eye examination at least once per year. Your eyes are worth it.
