Lift Chairs: Enabling Individuals To Become More Mobile

Author : Peter Gitundu

Lift chairs work wonders for people who are elderly, disabled, or have trouble getting into a standing position after sitting for any period of time. These electric chairs slowly rise higher and higher off the ground, eventually the person who was seated is then able to place his/her feet directly onto the floor and stand up.

The average weight limit an automatic chair can handle is between 375 and 450 pounds, but larger models are also offered. These bigger chairs can hold up to 700 pounds. Each type of chair varies from the next, not only in features, but also in price. Of course the more features there are, the higher the price is going to be.

Usually a lift chair is for sitting and reclining slightly, but not for sleeping in. This is considered to be a two position chair. A three position chair will allow a person to sit, recline, and lay flat for sleeping. Many chairs of the infinite position variety allow people to raise their feet higher above their heart, which is commonly required for certain medical conditions.

These automatic chairs can be quite pricey. A low-end chair can be around 400 dollars, while the higher-end versions cost in the thousands. The government will provide a small credit to go towards one of these special chairs if a person meets the right criteria.

Injuries have been known to occur with these automatic chairs, but only when they aren't used properly. There are some safety features that have been added by manufacturers, in order to cut down on the amount of injuries that happen. People who can't afford to buy an automated chair have tried using cushions that are specially designed for aiding a person in standing up easier from a seated position. Some individuals find they work well and others don't.

Becoming more mobile is a factor for many individuals who have lost even partial mobility. Losing mobility creates a sense of loss for a certain amount of personal independence also. A lift chair, scooter, or stair lift is able to provide more independence for most people who need assistance with becoming more mobile.

The number of people who have been helped by lift chairs is vast. The increase in personal independence is so great that many people find it hard to believe that something as simple as a chair can do so much good. Thankfully there are many different varieties, so that people are able to find the perfect chair to accommodate their needs.
