How Are Electric Wheelchairs Different From Manual Ones?

Author : Peter Gitundu

Whether you are dealing with arthritis, osteoporosis, or other degenerative bone and joint conditions, you have probably broached the subject of mobility. Obviously, it will still be important for you to move around, but it will get more and more difficult over time. That is why many companies have developed electric wheelchairs, which not only let you get around, but make it more convenient too.

These are very different from the traditional manual wheelchairs with the oversized wheels and the wide bulky frames. They required you to use your own strength and force to turn those wheels, and thus create the momentum needed to move. It was usually recommended that you let someone else push you, though, since these chairs were not very easy control in many regards.

These chairs were not very good looking either. Of course, they were designed simply for function, and were more prominent in hospitals and nursing homes, where a nurse would push you as you sat in the chair. Over time, then, people began to require use of wheel chairs in their daily lives.

It should not surprise you, though, that the incorporation of electronics really charged up the wheelchair world. It offered more accessibility to people with more difficult disabilities and really helped to change people's view of wheel chairs and why some people might need to use them.

Perhaps their rise in popularity is the reason why manufacturers began to make them more comfortable too. The seats became more resembling of automobile bucket seats along with the appropriate head rests and even similar fabric and stitching. Even arms were added, which were necessary to comfortably control the joystick or other conveniently placed controls.

What you are looking for in one of these machines is a solid combination of both agility and comfort. The rear wheels are much smaller, since they are operated by a motorized system, but they are also a little wider and softer too, offering more comfort. These chairs typically offer a more ergonomic foot rest too. Finally, the front wheels swivel at a full 360 degrees, giving you full range of motion.

Buying electric wheelchairs has never been easier! Now you can find them online, where you can order or print info on the different models that are available. Each manufacturer is different and thus offers various benefits that you might appreciate. Regardless, though, you will be sure to find something that suits both your needs and your tastes.
