Karate And Traditional Martial Arts: Defending Against Knives, Are Martial Arts Schools Generally Teaching Techniques Which Are Effective?

Author : Iza Scott

Over the years I had taken knives, screwdrivers, jemmies, chisels and other dangerous items off many different unpredictable people. #When we# practiced our Martial Art training we #built in# a fair bit of weapon defense simply because I knew #it was# necessary. Eventually we spent plenty of time with some renowned combat knife experts to further our comprehension of edged weapons. The principles and techniques of knife defence themselves are important but #the fact# remains, that #you still# can’t defend against what you don’t notice.
The terms ambush, sneak, stealth, surprise, frenzied, sustained, are words #I think# are effective to accurately describe knife street confrontations initiated on vulnerable victims.
The problem for #a lot# of martial art styles is that usually their training is inside a highly structured, formal and ritualized environment which is #the opposite# to influences or forces at play throughout a real knife assault. Adding to #that the# “covert” aspect of an attacker producing an edged weapon before or during an argument #and it# is evident that strong awareness in combination with Edged Weapon Pre-Attack Rituals and Early Recognition Skills training is the best defence but may not fit easily into many martial arts clubs curriculums.
Knife defense can also be a difficult subject for #a lot# of traditional martial arts groups due to varying student ages and levels of skill that have #to be# catered for. Knife defense classes for kids can also be complex. They shouldn't be allowed #to play#-act with knife defense, and #at #the same# time# you don't #want to# frighten them. To train effective edged weapon defence with realism #and contact# #the use of# the proper safety equipment is vital #and the# expense of these items aside from extra complications with insurance can also be #an issue# for Martial Arts groups.
Martial artists that are interested in teaching effective knife defense should get training from knife specialists. Because distancing in edged weapon defense is different than empty handed fighting, #it is# critical #to get a# feel #for the# true striking range that may be added with the length of a bladed weapon. Knife strikes can also be too fast to catch, block or parry. Congruent training practices are absolutely vital. Knife assault in my experience is unexpected and somewhat chaotic so you need to train for that. #The fact# remains that even #in the# hands of a totally untrained individual a knife can be utilized successfully and immediately.
Whatever the difficulties, we've found that it isn't impossible to utilize defensive methods effectively during an edged weapon assault or confrontation.
However, it #is absolutely# necessary to learn #as much# as you can #from a# expert in #the area# of knife and edged weapons instead of counting on old mutually cooperative prearranged Judo or Karate disarms.
Once #the new# edged weapon techniques are understood and absorbed, it's not that hard to include these new approaches into your existing martial art curriculum.
