This is a great way to reveal any trick where you are supposed to be able to magically choose your audience member's card. This works just as well with friends, or people you meet in bars. It starts of in a simple way, and can end in many ways, depending only on your imagination.
These are the nuts and bolts of this illusion. You do whatever trick you are planning to do, and then finish with their card. You have their card on top of the deck, just like normal. As you lift the card up, the audience will quickly realize that you've goofed somehow, as it's not their chosen card. Of course this is mind bogglingly simple once you know how.
You just pick up the top two cards, and hold them as though they are one. This easy enough to practice while watching TV or something. This will naturally become automatic after only a little bit of practice. It's an almost necessary skill to have as a conjurer of illusions, and can be used with many other tricks, so it's well worth your time.
So you pick up the two cards, and act like you are the best magician in the world when you hold up the two cards, and they see that the card you are holding out isn't there. You can do this to really warm the crowd up, and if you've done a really good job talking up your skills. Once you've convinced the audience that the top card is not their card (when it really is,) there are plenty of ways to make the magic switch.
You can say you forgot the last magic step, and take the top card off (their real card) and lay it face down on the table. Then do any form of mumbo jumbo voodoo magic that you like, and lift up their card so they will see it has magically transformed. One way to do this is to place a book or some other object on top of the "wrong" card, so when it's "transformed" the effect will be more enjoyable.
Another fun way to do this is to hold up the two cards, so they see the card that isn't there, and put them on top of the deck quickly. Then have an audience member take off the top card, not look at it, and place it in their pocket. Pretend that particular card is evil, and you've had problems with it before. Then ask them what the real card was, and look through the deck to make sure it's still there. Of course, it won't be. By now they person who is holding the card in their pocket will become suspicious, and check it. The spellbound audience will be amazed.
