Hearing Loss And How To Detect It

Author : Walter Cosme

People who are suffering from hearing loss should try to see an audiologist for a hearing test at the earliest possible time. They will be able to test the level of your hearing and look to diagnose any thing that might have affected it. This article is to help you understand more about the different tests that an audiologist may perform.

Expect to be asked questions concerning your medical history. Questions during the history might include inquiries about the type of work you do and the sounds you are exposed to while on the job. Its important to let the audiologist know about any past injuries or illnesses you may have had and they will ask you to provide them with details of any.

It is important to let the audiologist know about any relative that may have suffered from hearing loss as some conditions are known to be genetic. The most common form of physical examination during a hearing test is when the audiologist uses otoscope to look inside your ears. The otoscope allows the audiologist to check the eardrum for any visible signs that could relate to damage.

An audiogram will more than likely be carried out using specialist equipment in a sound proofed room. The patient enters the room and earphones are placed over the patients ears. Both ears are tested by playing sounds through the headphones and the lowest tone heard by each ear is noted by the audiologist. It's quite likely that you will remember having a similar test done when you were at school. The examination at the audiologist's will follow the same basic principles but the equipment used will probably be more advanced.

A tympanometry hearing test involves the use of a gentle pressure probe placed in the middle ear. During the test, air pressure is increased or decreased while a tone is sounded. By doing this examination the audiologist can determine whether there is fluid or disorders present that could be responsible for hearing loss.

You may have a test that uses a tuning fork to check the level of hearing loss. If placed next to the patient's ears the tuning fork makes the middle ears to vibrate. The tuning fork is then placed against the bone located behind the ear, causing vibrations to be sent to the inner ear. It is important to establish whether one of the tomes appeared louder to the patient. The audiologist can normally locate the precise point where the hearing loss takes place.

Another test that can determine the location of hearing loss is the ?site of lesion? test. It compares the hearing in each ear and it can detect the ability of the patient to hear when other noise is detected. The equipment used is the same as with the audiogram, but will be used to gather different sorts of results.

More detailed examinations may be recommended by the audiologist to see whether there are any medical conditions present in the patient that could be affecting their hearing. The nerves inside the patient?s inner ear can be examined by taking a special x-ray which may help to determine the causes of any hearing loss.

A truly accurate diagnosis may depend on combining different tests which will allow the best treatment to be prescribed. Many patients are successfully treated thanks to the variety of tests that are available and go on to lead fulfilling lives.
