Treating your toenail fungus infection with a home remedy probably seemed like a good idea at first. Everything that you needed was already in the house or easily available, and it was all so cheap! You really felt that you had nothing to lose, right?
Now, after soaking your nails in vinegar or tea tree oil (or, whatever...) for a few weeks (months?) you see no change in your nails whatsoever. That must seem strange, since all of those articles and forums that you've been reading online were written by people that claimed to have completely cured their infection using that very same remedy.
They wouldn't be lying to you about this, would they? after all, they weren't trying to sell you anything. (They weren't, were they?)
No matter, because, either way, they weren't lying. I have every confidence that the remedy worked for them exactly as they said it did. I'm also quite sure that, had you kept looking around, you would have found just as many people that have had the same luck that you're having (None!). Confusing, I know, but the reasons are actually very simple.
Nail fungus is just that...a fungus. A living thing! And, like all living things, it will evolve over time. When you also consider that each infection lives in it's own universe (so to speak), since your infected nails never contact the infected nails of other people. This being the case, it's easy to understand how the fungi can evolve along different lines in different environments.
The evolution of this fungus has been going on for many generations and many different strains have developed, each with it's own strengths and weaknesses. That's the reason that some home remedies (vinegar, tea tree oil, etc) will cure some people's infection and not cure others. Some strains are susceptible to these remedies while others are completely immune.
Therein lies your quandary. Nail fungus treatments, both home remedies and the medical variety, require a considerable amount of time to work. In most cases, changes to your nails won't become evident for a number of weeks or months, even with a prescription. Should the remedy that you have chosen be one that doesn't work on your particular fungus strain, you won't realize it for some time. So, you can see how making a couple of bad choices can result in a lot of lost time.
Eventually, if you continue to try different treatments, you should be able to find something that works...eventually. I would think that it would make more sense to use a proven effective over-the-counter remedy. Good OTC remedies have been tested on all known strains of the fungus, and their treatment duration is known, as well.
There is one thing you need to watch for, however. When choosing an OTC remedy, be sure to pick one that states clearly on the label that it's for treating NAIL fungus, not FOOT fungus. Nail fungus remedies are designed to soak through your nails and attack the fungus where it lives. Normally, simple foot fungus remedies won't do this, rendering them completely ineffective.
