A New Sufferer's 3 Must Do Rules For Colitis Symptoms

Author : Michael Tasker

They can appear quite quickly, gain strength over a short period of time and ultimately have the effect of changing your life forever. It is not uncommon to dismiss them when they first appear as a little inconvenience that will fade quickly, attributed to some bug or other. Yet with the first sight and feeling of colitis symptoms, action has to be taken to start the defence against what can be a very challenging medical condition.

It is essential to realise and understand that the disease of colitis is no respect of circumstances in your life. It is not in the same category as an ailment, where to counter the effect it can have on your health, it is reasonable to take a tablet or two to assist your return to good health. Quite simply, it is a fact that if a colitis attack is going to occur then it will happen which shall result in a major impact on your daily life. It would be wrong to think that you can just ignore it and carry on with daily life whilst also being able to cope with the symptoms. Plus also, there is always lurking a dangerous assumption that it will, to coin a phrase, "will disappear on its own accord". Unfortunately it won't as the symptoms are a result of a condition that is much more serious than an everyday stomach bug.

So you will be experiencing colitis symptoms in vary degrees of intensity that will include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, bloodied stools, weight loss, loss of appetite, feverish, acute tiredness and a feeling of nausea. As the ulceration of the inflammation of the colon becomes more pronounced during the attack, the symptoms become stronger. An attack can last for weeks plus there is a lengthy period of recuperation to try and reclaim some level of normal health which can take a further few months. It is the case that some colitis sufferers do not have the chance to enjoy periods of full remission and have to live daily with symptoms, though at a less than severe level of intensity.

The first of the golden rules is that the symptoms being suffered must be diagnosed by a doctor. You will be given prescriptive medication that you must take to start the fight back and give yourself the correct means to ensure the attack is defended against. The medication may include steroids which do have side effects but you should balance this with the fact that they are effective in treating almost all strengths of colitis symptoms. Secondly, you must accept that you are suffering from what can be a debilitating disease and therefore rest is vitally important. That means withdrawing from everyday activities such as work and your social life for a period of time until the attack is subsiding. And even then, life should be taken at a gentle pace during the period after an attack to ensure you do not provoke the symptoms from making an early reappearance.

The final yet equally important is that you must change your diet. During an attack your appetite will reduce to the point that you may not wish to eat anything. Very simple plain food should be taken when you feel like eating in snack size rather than a full meal. Don't eat foods that are classed as roughage or that will challenge the bowel such as those with spice. Maintaining a healthy diet can be forgotten about during this difficult time. And don't forget to keep taking liquids such a water to replenish what you will be losing.

For the duration of a colitis attack, the medication prescribed by your doctor will do its job given adequate time. It is in your interest to ensure that you assist your body in every way by giving it the best chance to come through the attack as soon as possible, and that means undertaking the three golden rules as soon as the first signs of colitis symptoms appear.
