This is a question that the majority of people who are reading this will have never asked him or herself before. None the less I hope to explain these wonderful creations to enlighten my readers telephony experience in the future. There are many myths surrounding these numbers so hopefully I can sort this out and help people understand the beauty of them.
Lets jump straight in with a technical definition from the mouth of myself who will say it in plain English so those none technical people out there will understand. A non geographical number is a telephone number that usually starts 08 although not exclusively anymore especially with the introduction of the new 03 numbers that doesn't have a geographical fixing point like the old local numbers did.
There are various benefits to your business in having a non geographical number attached to your business, one of which is giving your business a seemingly national presence when in fact you could be based out of an extremely small office and work on your own.
The other benefit which is probably the real reason that most companies decide to take on these numbers is the fact that dependant on who you get your numbers through you can receive a cash rebate every single time somebody calls your 08 number. There were some larger companies abusing this benefit so what used to be Ofcom are putting in some strict regulations to police this.
Where they get really clever is they can be moved from line to line almost instantly and in some cases the end user can obtain access to a control panel and literally move them him or herself. They are not called intelligent numbers for nothing and because these numbers are primarily network based there are lots and lots of useful statistics that can be pulled from them. This is a popular benefit for call centres as it allows them to be able to tell all sorts of useful information about their callers that can help any future marketing efforts.
Non geographic numbers or intelligent numbers are becoming more and more popular and have opened the door to more and more people being able to work from home whilst still giving the impression they are in the office simply because they are so easy to move around.
The darker side to these numbers is the fact that if you are calling locally they can cost a little bit more to the end user. However if your company is a national company the end user will pay the same price if they called from end of the country or if they were next door to you as there is one rate nationally.
This is the area that is most commonly miss understood and most people still believe that when calling an 08 number they will be paying the same premium rates as they would for an 09 number for instance. This simply isn't the case and there are far more benefits to both parties by using non geographical numbers so they are well worth looking into.
