Tips On Creating A Memorable Wedding Video

Author : AlexFc Thomason

A wedding video is one of those priceless mementos of a very special day. It can capture the atmosphere, laughter and emotion of the moment as you walk down the aisle, exchange vows and celebrate with friends and family afterwards. With so much else to think about on your wedding day, you don't want to be worrying about how the video is going to turn out. Here are a few tips to help you ensure that your wedding video will be truly memorable:

Where is Your Wedding Venue?

The setting of your wedding ceremony and celebrations often creates the mood and ambiance for the day. If you plan to have an outdoor wedding in a garden, you need to consider the shadows and lighting. Stark contrasts in light make it difficult for the videographer to get a clear picture at all times. Even automatic apertures take a while to adjust to shadows and bright light and it takes some expert knowledge to know how to work in different and contrasting environments. Keep this in mind when planning your ceremony. By knowing what can and can't be done in a specific venue, it will help you manage your expectations of the videographer.

What is Most Important to you on Your Wedding Day?

For some people, it's the intimate exchanging of vows that is the highlight of the day. For some, it's the bride walking down the aisle to meet her groom. And for others still, it's the joy of being able to share their special moment with friends and family. Think of what the most important aspect of your wedding day is to you and your future spouse. Then communicate this to the videographer so that they can focus on taking lots of footage of that aspect. It will result in a video that reflects your expectations and memories of the day rather than what the videographer does as a general standard.

Events in Your Wedding

In most weddings, there is much of a traditional ceremony with speeches and toasts, first dances, cutting the cake and so on. Often, it's a good idea to ask the videographer to record everything and then to edit out the lengthy speeches and parts of the ceremony that you don't want to feature in your video. What works well is to have highlights of the day stitched together as part of your wedding video package rather than feature each event in real time.

Guests at Your Wedding

Friends and family are a big part of the wedding celebrations. It's nice to be able to feature different tables of guests chatting away and record the crazy antics on the dance floor. It's also nice to see the expressions on the guests’ faces as you walk down the aisle and exchange rings. Often, this can be achieved by simply zooming out from the bridal couple for a moment and focusing briefly on the guests. Some videographers like to interview guests and record their good wishes for the bridal couple. This really personalizes the video and makes it a priceless memory.

Choosing a Videographer

Videographers can be expensive and because of this, many bridal couples simply get a family member or friend to shoot the video on a standard video camera. While it may not have the professional finish of an expert, these home-type videos often do a really excellent job of capturing the atmosphere and sentiment of the day.

Working With a Professional Videographer

If you plan to work with a professional, you will find that they often do much of the planning and direction for you. In general, they know what makes a really memorable wedding video so it's simply a case of tailoring their expertise to match your expectations of the day. Ask to look at their portfolio. This will give you a good idea of their style. It's also a good idea to ask for references. Often, the finished product may look good but perhaps the videographer was difficult to work with on the day. A past client will be able to tell you in their own words what it was like to work with the videographer. Other questions you should ask of the videographer are the time taken to edit and produce the final video and what level of input you have in the editing process. What they may think is unimportant may be something that you really want to include. Quite often your choice is limited by budget but consider the value of having the video as a memento of your wedding day. Sometimes it's worth paying that little bit more for something you can treasure for years to come.
