When I first began my career as an entrepreneur, I wanted to seize and jump on every opportunity that crossed my path... although you would assume that fire has died, it has not. Nope, it still burns within me every day. I see so many needs, so many solutions and so many ways to potentially make money. The only difference is that today, I have extraordinary focus, strong intentions and a super easy time saying "no." I call this the "Bright, Shiny Object" syndrome and it affects nearly every entrepreneur on the face of the planet. As Speakers, Authors, Coaches, Entrepreneurs, and Info-Marketers we have to maintain our focus to achieve the desired results we are after; whether we are securing a certain number of speaking engagements, writing a book, or creating a new product to sell. We want to achieve extraordinary results at whatever it is that we provide with our product or service. If your attention is always pulled away by the "next great thing" then you will truly never be able to build your business and achieve the financial and personal freedom that we all desire. Following are the 8 questions you must always ask yourself before saying "yes" to another bright, shiny object.
1) Does this serve me, my family and my business in the highest possible way today?
2) Will this in anyway harm me, my family or my business, whether long term or short term?
3) Does this hinder my success and growth in my core business today?
4) Will this promote the success and growth of my core business?
5) Am I willing and able to do what it takes to make this happen?
6) Is there a flame that burns deep inside of me, that will stay ignited through the many late hours, long days and other missed opportunities in order to take this one?
7) What will I have to lose or let go of in order to fit this into my life?
8) Is it worth it?
I know that some of this seems harsh, yet, I think it is far easier to ask these questions of myself, answer honestly from the core of my being, and then make the right choice.
When I first started out, I would say yes to everything that came my way. It only hindered my success and made me work far harder to get results. In addition, it did not allow me to nurture relationships that would have today, been great connections for me.
Worst of all, by always saying "yes" to everything, I was not making any money, I was working like crazy to fulfill all of my promised obligations and I never had time to really develop my true desire; To create the most successful training and education company in the world.
So, as you step out to further develop your Businesses, stop and take the time to evaluate the opportunities. You will know immediately if you need to say "no..." do we need to practice that word together? (If you are not someone that is good at "no," just say it really fast—it makes it easier!) If you like your answers to the questions above, it will be an easy "yes" and that opportunity will only add to your success.
