An Alabaster Figure Makes A Great Art Piece For Anyone To Admire

Author : Jens Wagner

Everyone is aware of Alabaster, but may not know exactly what it is or what it is used for. For many years it has been used to make an alabaster figure that is beautiful art.

The name alabaster is applied to varieties from two very distinct minerals: gypsum and calcite. The gypsum is the alabaster that is used in the figures made today. The other was used in ancient figures.

These two different kinds can be easily distinguished due to their relative hardness. The gypsum alabaster is very soft and can be easily scratched by your fingernail. The calcite can't be scratched with a fingernail at all because it is too hard though it can be scratched with a knife.

White alabaster is commonly used in figures and other art pieces. The term white alabaster has entered the dialect as a metonym meaning white things especially "alabaster skin".

Did you know that the "alabaster" of the Bible was known as Oriental alabaster because the early examples come from the Far East. The name alabastrites which is Greek is said to come from the town of Alabastron which is in Egypt where the stone was quarried.

The Oriental alabaster was used for making many different items such as:

- Small perfume bottles

- Ointment vases which were known as alabastra

- Canopic jars

- Other sepulchral and sacred objects.

- Cut in thin sheets it is translucent enough that it has been used in medieval churches as windows especially in Italy. It can still be used for windows today.

These are just a few of the ways that it was used in the older days but these days it is still used for making figures and many other items. It is imperative to know that there are different kinds of alabaster available for use.

Some of the figures that are made are from the white alabaster while others are from the green variety of alabaster. It is always a good idea to take time to research these figures on your own so you can see exactly what they look like and why they make great art for anyone to enjoy.

You have to do your homework to check it out for yourself in order to fully understand and comprehend why an alabaster figure makes such beautiful art and would be enjoyed by all. This is definitely a good idea if you are struggling to come up with a great gift idea because you can't go wrong with this type of beautiful gift.
