Cesenatico: Histories Of Power, Independence And Sea

Author : Lia Contesso

Independence “for the first time” because Austrians came down in 1799, only one year after Cesenatico had reached its longed-for separation, and obliged the newborn town renounce to its independence and go back to Cesena; but a first time implies a second: after having reached the goal, it’s difficult to renounce to it, so in 1800 Cesenatico abandoned, for the second and last time, Cesena, its independence will be officially recognized in 1827, from the Church as well.

The division obviously took many difficulties, first of all the city limits: it took fifteen years to reach an agreement, that finally arrived on the 3rd June 1842, just in time to live the revolutionary period of Italian’s independence and enjoy the entrance of Garibaldi in the city of Cesenatico in 1849. The, in March 1860 Cesenatico joined the Reign of Italy as a city of attested independence.
Many thing change since that period; the newborn city became a mass tourism destination able to host about 22 thousand people (almost as many as its inhabitants, which reach the number of 25 thousand), and counts about 3 millions of tourists per year. It is strongly characterized by a building that cannot pass unobserved, its skyscraper; it was in the Fifties built on the seaside as a symbol of the new Cesenatico, modern and touristic. It’s a massive presence from where you’ll enjoy a sight on the Adriatic sea, that washes the Riviera Romagnola – looking from a more practical point of view, before reaching the sea and the horizon, the sight will lie on the interminable row of bathing resorts, perfectly distributed on the whole coast and impeccably organized.

So, Cesenatico is a relatively new city, under the administrative independence point of view, but very ancient as a urban centre; nevertheless, its structure is very modern due to the damages caused by the Second World War, that obliged to an almost complete reconstruction. The historical part that resisted till now is that of the port-canal: it was projected by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1500 and was intended to connect Cesenatico and Cesena, about 15 km away. Briefly, the project has not been completed because of pope Alexander VI’s death: his son, Cesare Borgia, had conquered a great part of Romagna but, with the end of his father’s power and, even worse, with the election of a Borgia’s enemy, Giuliano Della Rovere, as pope Julius II, Cesare found himself into Castel Sant’Angelo’s prisons in no time, and the great connection project remained where it was: at the beginning.

Anyway, the beginning of the canal is still visible, and it welcomes Cesenatico’s visitors, showing off its berthed sailing ships, part of the museum of the marine; during the Christmas period (1st December – 6th January) a crib scene with natural height characters is staged on the boats.
