Which Home Teeth Whitening Method Should You Use?- Trays, Strips, Pens Or Powders?

Author : J Pal

There are 4 common options available for home teeth whitening. These are: trays, strips, powders and pens.

Here is a brief overview of how each works...

Trays work like a gum shield, you wear the tray anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, twice a day or overnight. The tray usually contains a 10-20% concentration of hydrogen peroxide.

Strips work by covering the outside of individual teeth with the strips. These are left on for 30 minutes. The strips are usually made from plastic with one side coated with a thin layer of hydrogen peroxide.

Pens are usually gel based. Then pen contains a gel that is applied to your teeth using a small brush at the end of the pen. You literally paint on the gel to the outside of your teeth. You can control the amount of gel that is dispensed. The main ingredient in the pen is hyrdrogen peroxide.

Powder can be applied with an applicator such as a swab or a tooth brush. The powder is usually mixed with water or a water based solution before application. It is then applied to your teeth twice a day. You then rinse your mouth with water to get rid of the solution.

It is also advisable not to eat or drink for at least 20 minutes after these treatments. All of the above home teeth whitening methods contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These are bleaching agents that whiten your teeth. A lower concentration of these chemicals can also be found in toothpastes and mouth washes.

How long can the effects of home teeth whitening products last? Depending on a persons lifestyle, results can vary but can last for many months. Factors which can decrease the whitening effect most include things like smoking and drinking dark coloured liquids such as red wine, tea and coffee.

How often do you have to use home teeth whitening products to get good results? This depends on how badly your teeth are stained. Some users may require more applications than others before they see good results. This is because some stains are harder to remove than others.

So which should you choose? Using the pen is the most simple and convenient. The powder is my second choice for the same reasons.

However, all 4 home teeth whitening methods should give good results and are still a lot cheaper than expensive dentist treatments. If you don't like the idea of going to the dentist or getting laser surgery, they are a good option.
