Hiring A Cleaner: Direct Or Through Agency?

Author : Jo Harris

Hiring a cleaner to clean your huge house may not be the easiest job around but then, cleaning the house yourself may be much more difficult. So, if you have the option, you would rather pay someone to do the job for you rather than doing it half heartedly yourself.

Before hiring a cleaner for the house, decide what part of the house and what things you would want to be cleaned. It is better to have them written down to avoid confusion later. It will also help in determining how many hours you would need the services of the cleaner for. A cleaner can be hired either directly or through a cleaning agency. Both have their pros and cons. Hiring a cleaner directly, you have to set the products they use, the time they come, the number of hours they work. It will also lead to developing a good working relationship with the cleaner for the future. But if they quit or fall ill, then you will find yourself looking for someone again. Also, since you are the employer, you would have the tax and accounting responsibilities of the cleaner. On the other hand, employing a cleaner through a cleaning agency ensures that even in case of illness or resignation, you get a replacement. The employment, accounting and tax responsibilities are done away with. But the cleaner may refuse to use certain products which you find more suitable. Also, she may refuse to do any extras for you.

Once a cleaner is hired, it is important that his space and time is respected. Do not cross paths unnecessarily and keep the kids out of the way as this may distract and irritate the cleaner. You wouldn’t like to be disturbed this way either while doing your job. Do remember to communicate with the cleaner on a regular basis. Telling her how much you liked the job or how badly a certain area was cleaned, a week after it was done will not do any good.

Always remember that a cleaner is also a human. Talk to her in a respectful tone and use decent language. Around the holidays, giving a small gift or a bonus would not be a bad idea. Everyone appreciates such gestures and this helps in building a rapport for the coming years.
