Carpet Cleaning: Removing Dirt, Odour & Stains

Author : Jo Harris

A carpet is a very important element of your home decor. Purchasing a carpet is a big investment and quite a challenging task. Therefore, in order to move this effort away from you for as long as possible, you should think about proper maintenance of your brand new carpet. As it lies on the floor, it is obvious that it carries lots of dirt, dust and stains due to spill of various things you carry in your hands. A dirty carpet can invite many health problems for you and your family. If left dirty for a long time, it becomes home to germs, moulds, bacteria, dust mites and many other microorganisms. Especially families with kids, elderly people and sick people should be aware of the problem as negligence here may result in serious effects. Regular cleaning of carpets prevents you and your family from frequent health problems connected with asthma, allergies and many others.

For regular cleaning of your carpet, you need not have the services of professional cleaners. You can perform the everyday care of your carpet yourself, however, for proper cleaning, you’ll need to use proper equipment. Regular vacuuming of the carpet is most essential when it comes to carpet cleaning, especially, if you have pets at home. In addition, if it starts smelling, use an organic solution, which keeps children and pets safe. To maintain your carpet properly, you should go for regular professional cleaning about every 4 to 6 months.

When it comes to cleaning of stains, there are many stain cleaning products available in the market. Let us share a few tips to clean stubborn stains.

If there is candle wax stain on the carpet, take a piece of paper or a paper tissue and a hot iron. Place the paper over the spot and place hot iron over it. This will melt the wax and it’ll adhere to the paper. Do this several times, using a fresh piece of paper and clean the leftover stain with a commercial cleaner.

To remove pet stains, use an alcohol or a dry cleaner solvent. Rub it very gently or rather blot it. Use a swirling motion, starting from the edge of the stain inwards. This tip will prevent the stain from spreading. Before using alcohol over the stain, first test the carpet for colour fastness.

One more tip, if you are not sure of the kind of stain, stay away from using hot water. Hot water is notorious for setting stains of some kinds into the material itself. Stains of blood or chocolates set deep into the carpet, if cleaned with hot water. For removing bloodstain, use a mixture of a half cup of water with one tablespoon of ammonia. In this case also, do not rub, rather blot it gently.

Hence, it may seem strange, but you can keep your family healthy by regular cleaning of the carpet. In addition, it increases the life of the carpet. And finally, you can enjoy clean cosy interior of your home. This is it!
