Martin University Aims To Educate Low Income And Adult Learners

Campus Features

Originally the campus of the university was located at 35 th ST. and College Ave. It came over to Avondale Place in Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood in the year 1987. Initially the campus was of the former church and school but subsequently multiple other structures were added to the campus. Most notable additions were the $10 million Education Center and Peace Garden in the year 2001. Average class size is 20 students per class.

Brief History

Founded by Reverend Fr. Boniface Hardin in the year 1977, the university aims at serving the low income vulnerable sectors as well as the adult learners. However over the years students from all sectors of the society have been coming to the University for Education.

Accreditation

Martin Center College received the accreditation from State of Indiana in 1979 and from North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1980, and again in 1987. Approval for offering Master's degrees in community psychology and urban ministry studies were received in 1990.

Programs Offered

As many as 17 different undergraduate degrees besides two master's degrees are offered by the university that is the only predominantly African-American university located in Indiana. Music, mathematics, accounting, sociology, and psychology are the main programs offered in the university.

Methodology

Unique learning method employed by the Martin University is popularly known as andragogy. In sharp contrast to pedagogy used in most of the universities it involves adult learners in the process of learning thus encouraging them to bring up their experiences in to the classroom discussions.
