How To Properly Store Your Printer Inks

Author : Wendy Moyer

We all know how much money you can save by buying things in bulk. Want to save money on toilet paper? Get the 12-pack instead of the 6-pack. The same goes for printer inks. When you buy more ink cartridges at once, you can save a bundle. But what if you are not going to be using those cartridges for a long time? And what if you are going away for a long time and have already used some of your cartridges? This is when it helps to know how to properly store unused or used printer inks.

The first thing you need to do is get one zip-sealed bag for each printer cartridge. Place each cartridge in its own bag and then move on to the next step. It is important to use bags that are sealed with a zipper so that you can be sure that no more oxygen will get into the bag with your cartridge.

The second step is to add some moisture to the bag. Use a small towel or sponge and dip it into water to dampen it. Make sure that you wring out any excess water. While your fabric or sponge should be damp, it should not be dripping water. After you have wrung out your sponge, place one sponge in each of the zip-sealed bags where you plan to store your ink cartridges.

When it comes to actually storing your zipped bags, choose a place that is cool and dark. I prefer to use my closet that is in my office, as it is a practical place to store these cartridges.

As I mentioned before, this method can be used with both cartridges that have not been used and those that have. However, there is another step to take if you are using this process for a used cartridge. Before you store the cartridge, place a small piece of tape over the cartridge's print head to keep it secure.

Keep in mind while preparing your cartridges to be stored that the cartridges' print head is extremely delicate. Therefore, take all the care you can when getting your cartridges ready for storage.

While this method seems simple enough, it is a huge step that you can take to ensure that you don't return from your vacation or leave of absence to find dried-out, clogged printer cartridges. However gratifying it is to buy things in bulk, it is equally as frustrating for those things to be ruined before you get to use them up!
