What Is A Debt Settlement Lawyer? Do You Really Need One?

Author : J.J. Yong

Before you decide that you need one, you need to know if you understand their job scope and if you really need an attorney. Basically these kinds of lawyers have the skills to renegotiate your debt with your creditors and they normally work with people who are at least in debt of $25,000. They will individually contact each and every creditor that you might have and request to re-discuss and restructure your debt. From here, they will also forge an agreement with your creditors or debt collection agencies so that these creditors only go through your lawyer instead of going to you directly and harassing you.

Your lawyer is also responsible in obtaining your credit report and making sure that every detail on it is accurate and up to date. This is a very important step for in making sure that your credit report stays clean an as this will help you to restore your credit rating and better manage your finances in the future. You should also know that using a settlement lawyer can harm your credit, but if your credit rating is already poor, then you should just enlist their service to help clear your unsettled debt and re-build your credit ratings.

You will have to decide if you need a lawyer or not. Remember that the services they offer will not be free, you will definitely need to pay them a fee for their services. You can start by looking for firms that have debt settlement attorneys or specialize in debt settlement. Then, ask them to provide you with an estimate cost for their services. Once you have this, then you should be able to decide if you need their services or not. For example, suppose that you have $30,000 worth of debt and maybe you are looking to pay off at least 70% or less of that debt, then the lawyers' fees should not exceed that $30,000. If suppose you go ahead with the lawyers and yes, your debt is reduced to 70% but their fees is an additional 40%, then how are you supposed to pay them off? That is why you will need to research these kinds of things and decide what is best for you as no one else can do this for you.

Basically, this is a field where you need to try everything to find a right fit so there will be some trials and errors. Again, do not give up, persevere and you will be able to pull through.
