Wedding Invitations Trends And Types

Author : AlexFc Thomason

For as long as man has taken woman to be his lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, those vows have been made in the company of family and friends.

Before the days of the printing press, the announcement of a forthcoming marriage was made by town criers who would announce the news, inviting the whole community to join the happy couple on their special day. Wealthy European families began employing artists and calligraphers to create beautifully crafted letters which would then be couriered on horseback to other important families.

And so Began the Tradition of the Wedding Invitation.
For decade upon decade, they have fallen on doorsteps, in beautifully written, personally addressed top-quality envelopes. Carefully chosen, beautiful cards with a romantic poem or verse, personalized with the names of the individuals being married. From elegant and refined to bright and colorful, some even with funny cartoons, each invitation has been unique to the couple. Whatever they chose, family and friends have carefully opened that envelope to pull out a stunning, decorated card inviting them to this special event. The invite is placed on the mantel, shelf or even stuck on the fridge.

This Tradition Continues Today
A recent trend is for "share the date" cards to be sent out as soon as the date has been decided. This gives family and friends a heads-up on the date of the wedding and helps to make sure as many of them as possible can plan your wedding into their increasingly busy lives. As traditionally invites are sent out about six weeks before the wedding, these cards are a great forewarning to the wedding, particularly if the day is some time away.

Such a huge variety of different colors, looks, artwork, typeface and wording make it easy to make to find the perfect design for any couple. Choosing the right invitation is now part of the preparation for the big day. Much time is spent browsing through book after book of designs, and surfing the Internet as you consider the look and feel of each design. You can also talk to designers, looking for the one that suits you best. Wedding invitations, like the wedding dress, is subject to trends and moves with the times.

Recent trends include funky stripes, whether vertical or horizontal, multi-colored or in tones to match the wedding color scheme; pinstripes are hot! Another trend is to embellish invitations with jewels, perhaps rhinestones or tiny beads to make a statement with an understated elegance. Today, bold colors are also very modern, with couples using bright cards with simple white lettering. Other current trends are creating individual invites using fabric and wood, or even a super-funky acrylic invite. Vintage patterns, perhaps based on the wedding gown or flowers, are also popular. Another trend is monograms, a simple idea of using the first initials of the couple to form the design, and followed up at the reception with the new monogram, including the chosen last name; this monogram will last for life and is a constant reminder of the day.

Sending pre-printed RSVP cards with an addressed envelope helps create your wedding theme, makes it easy and quick for guests to respond, and gives the bride something to look forward to-all those RSVPs coming back in the mail! Couples now are also opting to continue their design onto the envelope.

Nowadays, advances in technology have made it easier than ever to create very personal invitations. Couples use special photographs, of themselves or a special place, as part of their unique design. Trendy couples may choose to send e-invites by email, or use text messaging or even social network sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Some even choose to make a video, YouTube it and send the link to their family and friends. In fact, with every technological advance, there is yet another inspirational way to make a wedding invitation as special and unique as the couple themselves. All are fabulous, fun and unique ways of inviting loved ones to share the day but there is nothing quite like that envelope coming in the mail.
