4 Steps To Designing A Safe And Sound Baby's Nursery

If you're expecting a new member of your family, one of the most rewarding and fun projects you can do is to decorate your baby nursery. It is also very important to do it the right way because a poorly planned nursery can injure your baby. However a well decorated nursery will keep your baby safe and sound and give you both an amicable atmosphere within which you can bond.
Designing your nursery is a two step process. First, you'll want to design a functional plan. Then you'll want to actually decorate it.
Draw a Floor Plan
Begin by drawing a floor plan of the nursery. Add in the closets, windows, lighting, and electric outlets. Once you've made your master copy either scan it on your computer and print out additional copies to work on or make some photocopies.
Make a List
Make a list of every major functional item that you will need for your baby. You will probably want to include a crib and crib bedding, a dresser or a chest of drawers, a change table, and perhaps a rocking chair or a glider chair. Next figure out the maximum amount of space you can allocate to each of these items.
Consider the Room Lighting
You will probably want to keep the crib away from any window because windows let in the heat and cold. Also, as your baby gets older and more mobile, he or she will be able to pull on the curtains. If you have curtains that let too much light in you can consider replacing them with block out blinds.
Next, add a dimmer switch so you can have more control over your lighting. This way you can keep the light low and be able to go into the nursery without awakening your baby.
Consider the Flooring
A lot of people overlook the necessity of decorating the nursery floor. If your floors are hard you can buy a soft nursery rug.
Carpet is also an option because it muffles noise and it too is a soft surface for your baby to crawl around on. But carpets require more attention because they can trap allergens. You will have to shampoo your carpet relatively frequently. The downside to putting a carpet on the floor is that it will introduce more chemicals into your baby's nursery.
A viable alternative is having a cork floor installed. Cork floors are soft and spongy and easily cleaned. All you've got to do is sweep them and they're as good as new.
If your floor plan indicates that you still have room you can consider adding a nightstand or a bookcase. But don't stuff the room with furniture because you want to be able to easily move from one place in the nursery to the other without any obstructions.
Once you've designed your room it's time to think about decorating it.
