The Most Efficient GMC Cars Of 2009

Author : AlexFc Thomason

Buying a new or used car or truck these days is about a lot more than choosing a favorite body style or selecting the perfect interior color. According to experts in the auto industry, fuel efficiency has become the number one concern for car buyers.

Unstable gas prices combined with the rising cost of living have Americans looking to cut expenses wherever they can. Fuel-efficient cars and trucks lower the cost of operating a vehicle by giving drivers the most bang for their buck. These types of vehicles get more miles to the gallon which reduces fuel consumption. Not only do fuel-efficient cars and trucks save money, they are easier on the environment which is another reason why more and more people are buying them.

GMC has become one of the nation's leading innovators in fuel efficiency, developing hybrid trucks and SUVs that can save more than $1,500 in fuel costs per year. A hybrid vehicle uses two or more separate power sources to move the vehicle. Most commonly, these are hybrid electric vehicles which combine an internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors. Using two power sources, rather than just relying on gasoline, is what makes hybrid vehicles so cost-effective.

Here are just a few of the most efficient GM models of 2009:

GMC Sierra Hybrid

GMC says "work hard, tread lightly," when it comes to this pick-up truck. The Sierra Hybrid is only offered in the roomy, crew-cab configuration with four full-size doors but it closely resembles the body style of the standard GMC Sierra. What makes this truck so different is its new powertrain which has garnered an EPA fuel economy rating of 21 miles per gallon (mpg) for city driving and 22 mpg on the highway. A 300-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery pack stores electricity for the system, making it more fuel-efficient. This vehicle has 332 horsepower and 367 pound-feet of torque. The acceleration rate is very similar to that of the standard Sierra's 5.3-liter V-8. It also has a five-star crash rating. GM's patented two-mode hybrid system delivers a highly efficient performance in the Sierra Hybrid. It even features all-electric driving up to 30 miles per hour which offers fuel savings even if the truck is fully loaded and towing a trailer.

Yukon Hybrid

GMC did a good job of keeping this hybrid looking like the original Yukon. This nine-passenger SUV continues to be a favorite among full-size SUVs. The 2009 hybrid has had some aerodynamic changes but nothing major. Most people can't tell the difference between the new hybrid Yukon and the original body style. This SUV can tow up to 6,200 pounds but is 300 pounds lighter than the original. Aluminum has been used in the hood and front tailgate, a trick that increases fuel economy. A two-mode hybrid system allows one mode to assist the vehicle with slow, city driving and the other with highway driving. This system has reportedly made the Yukon hybrid 25 percent more fuel-efficient in combined city/highway driving and as much as 50 percent more fuel-efficient in city driving. Like the GMC Sierra Hybrid, it gets an average of 21 mpg/22 mpg for highway and city driving and has 332 horsepower. It has a 6.0-liter V-8.

Acadia

Although this GMC crossover SUV is not a hybrid, it is still considered a fuel-saving vehicle and one of the best in its class. Delivering 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, the mammoth Acadia is an eight-passenger vehicle with spacious interior, perfect for family and cargo transport. The 2009 model comes with a single powertrain, gets a 3.6L direct injection V6 that produces 288 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque with a standard six-speed automatic transmission. It comes with safety features like the StabiliTrak stability control system which monitors traction control and automatic tire pressure monitoring. It also has anti-lock disc brakes and front and side curtain air bags, making it both efficient and safe. The Acadia has been named one of the "most handsome" vehicles with an elegant body style that appeals to those who love SUVs.
