What Makes A Good Violin Lesson For Children?

Author : Pamelina Siow

Many parents want their children to learn to play a musical instrument, which leads them to enrol their children to violin lessons. Having a child who knows how to play an instrument means a lot to them. To them, it is a perfect accomplishment. And a child with a perfect accomplishment, means they have "perfect" parents.

This attitude, while not bad, should not be the driving force behind a child's entry into music school. There should be other considerations like, will the child like to learn to play an instrument? How will the lessons benefit him in the future?

After answering these questions and thinking over the child's welfare, it's time to enroll your child to a violin music school. Although children will at first be hesitant about the suzuki violin lessons, he would warm up to the idea. Some things are needed to be present, in order for a violin lesson for children to be good and acceptable.

First, the lesson should be fun and full of interaction. Children have very short attention spans so the teacher has to devise activities to make the lessons memorable for them. Interaction will open your child to other people and help him be more sociable. It can happen in a classroom or one-on-one setting, as long as he gets to open up to new people. When you put these two together, the child will look forward to each lesson with excitement.

A violin lesson should of course include a wonderful teacher. No good will come of having a talent when it is not developed with the help of a really competent teacher? The teacher should have good vibes with the students. But at the same time, he should know how to disciple them. Although the two are a little contradicting, it's still possible. A truly great instructor should be able to be both friendly and firm to maintain the interest and respect of the students. It is best for children to learn respect and obedience while they are still innocent and easily impressed.

Having a violin lesson is better when it's done in a bright and open room. A good location for the violin music school would be near the window or at least the room should have bright lights. The children will study more diligently, if they know that their instructors are constantly watching their work.

Children naturally love rewards. To make the lessons more interesting for the children, there should be rewards at the end of each lessons. It doesn't need to be in money-wasting activities, because children are already happy with praises and hugs. Give these to them after a stressful day, and they're sure to appreciate it. And don't forget to encourage them, so that they will be more inclined to learn.

As you can see, the makings of a good violin lesson don't start and end in the classroom. Parents should be there, supportive and encouraging, so that the children will appreciate the lessons more. The lessons itself may be boring, but it can be made more interesting by the people around the child, like the parent, teacher, or the fellow students.
