In history, these kinds of beds go back quite a long ways, though they weren't always called what they are today. In those days, they most often were known as loft beds and they usually had a certain kind of role to fill.
In those days, a typical loft bed was situated high off the ground in order to give more living space to the room below the bed. There are a number of different varieties and styles of this kind of bed, with most today being made in what's called a contemporary style. They generally come in a very nice line with solid colors or neutral elements that make it possible for them to fit well in many different environments. They also can come with headboards and footboards as a part of their overall package.
However, many such beds as these often don't come with a footboard or headboard, so keep that in mind when considering a purchase. There are also a number of so-called "traditional" styles of bed that try to incorporate the idea of a platform into a bed that was made for a more handsomely-aged style such as the Arts and Crafts era or even the early Mission era of furniture design.
These days, it's a rare furniture store that doesn't offer at least a couple of different styles of this bed and in a variety of prices. One has a choice of purchasing something that might actually look retro or more traditional or go for something very low slung and sleek. Expect to pay between $250 and $1500, depending on quality and what kind of materials that the bed will be made of.
The wide variety and styles of platform beds today belie the fact that these beds have a long lineage. They've never really gone out of style at any one time, though they've been very popular at certain points in bed history. They are partly appealing because they require only a mattress and don't need a box spring and also because they can be as sleek and low-slung as one wishes, which is something that appeals to many.
