Living With Rosacea

Author : Susan Drake

Rosy cheeks are often seen as the glow of health. But did you know those rosy cheeks could actually be a very serious skin condition?

What shows up as a flushing on the face might be the beginning of rosacea.

Rosacea is a skin condition affects millions of people around the world. It is characterized by red cheeks, forehead, chin and lower nose. Rosacea sometimes resembles acne, but it's quite different.

In the beginning rosacea is mild and redness comes and goes quickly. As it progresses, flushing appears more frequently and becomes permanent in the central part of the face. Broken blood vessels may be visible and small red bumps and pimples can appear. Those suffering from advanced stages of rosacea look as if they're sunburned all the time. Flushing is not only frequent but uncomfortable.

Left untreated, rosacea continues to worsen with age. Rosacea is most common in fair-skinned people and it's nearly three times more common in women than men. There currently is no cure for rosacea.

But there are important ways to help rosacea sufferers with diet, lifestyle and specially-formulated products.

Rosacea diet.

Those with rosacea find a diet rich in fresh vegetables, low sugar fresh fruits, whole grains, seeds and nuts, chicken and fish are beneficial. And be sure to drink lots of pure water throughout the day.

Wait for hot foods and beverages to cool before consuming. Avoid spicy seasonings and alcohol. Many people react negatively to cheese, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus fruits and juices, pasta, yogurt, sour cream, soy sauce, avocado, artificial sweeteners and foods with preservatives.

Rosacea lifestyle.

Anything that causes an increase in blood circulation to the face or neck can trigger rosacea. They include sunlight, stress, strenuous exercise, hot baths and saunas and weather extremes 'hot, cold and wind. Keep as cool, calm and collected as possible.

Rosacea product treatment.

Many products on the market are designed specifically for rosacea sufferers. The best are therapeutic in their approach and often times are in a prescription strength tested and endorsed by dermatologists.

These products are specifically designed to be applied daily, morning and night. They include cleansers that calm the skin while gently removing bacteria. Some have special topical gels that are used on people with inflamed pustules and papules. Such gels and creams protect, moisturize and reduce redness. And finally, a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 is recommended. But be aware. Some sunscreens can irritate the skin, which is exactly what rosacea sufferers don't need.

It is possible to keep rosacea in check. Diet is essential. Eat the proper foods and avoid those that aggravate. Be aware of the elements and handling weather accordingly. And finally, use the best products on the market for relief. Rosacea can significantly decrease and quality of life improve.
