The infrared makes use of the heat signatures emanating from different objects to detect motion. The sensor measures the heat that is given off by an object that passes its monitored area. It then compares it against the background temperature such as a wall.
The disadvantage of this type of sensor is that it cannot cover a large area like a floodlight. It rather works like a flashlight with finger-like points covering center areas. Those that are in between the covered areas are not monitored. Therefore, someone passing through these areas will not be detected.
You can buy any of the two kinds of motion sensors to complement your home security system. If you are having a hard time deciding which to use, you can ask for the help of a security expert.
