Your bedroom should be a place of quiet calm, so careful thought needs to go into designing and furnishing it. Your first thought should perhaps be the theme or style you wish the room to have, you can then build the room around your chosen theme. Another consideration is the size and shape of the room and a bit of care and thought will need to go into making the room look and feel right.
Make a Plan of the Bedroom
It is a good idea to make a plan on paper of the size and dimensions of the room, showing where the door, windows and electrical points are. This will allow you to have precise measurements for your furniture and where you can place it making the most of the available space.
It can be very difficult to find enough or just the right furniture and this is particularly so with an odd or unusually shaped room as standard furniture may be difficult to fit easily. Wardrobes in particular can be difficult to fit if the room has a low ceiling or a part of the pitched roof as a feature. There are of course ways around this which will still allow you to have adequate space for your clothes.
Using a reputable firm who produce made to measure built in wardrobes is one answer, as they should be able to construct a high quality wardrobe that will both fit and suit your room, your needs and follow your chosen theme. The other benefit of fitted wardrobes is that they take up less space and will of course fit perfectly in your room. The downside is that once they are installed, you can't move them if you want to change the room around and won't be able to take them with you when you move home. Of course they may well help you sell your home which is another benefit.
Your bed is the most important piece of furniture in your bedroom, so make sure that you have adequate space for it. Ensure there is enough space on either side of the bed for you to move around and open your wardrobe and drawers. You will probably want some sort of bedside cabinet, so choose something at the right height for your bed and keep it within easy reach. There are headboards for beds which come with cabinets attached and these can be good space saving devices.
Once you have your bed in place and chosen your wardrobes, you will need some drawer space. There are many types and styles of chest of drawers, so you will need some that is in keeping with your theme and that fit easily and well in your room. If you are having built in wardrobes, you might like to get some chests of drawers that match, or get your fitted bedroom supplier to include some drawers in the wardrobe design. However, if you want separate cabinets, see if the company doing your wardrobes also make chests of drawers. You may be able to get a good deal if they do your whole bedroom. The drawers should be large enough to store your clothes easily but not so large that they are unmanageable.
The overall picture your bedroom should present is a place of order, peace and relaxation. Your furniture is an integral part of that and so make sure it is both functional and also beautiful.
