Memory foam is made from visco elastic polyurethane foam and has some unique traits. Lying on a full memory foam mattress will cause it to mold to the shape of the body, but it will then return to its initial form, hence the designation memory foam. NASA first created it in the 1970s, but as manufacturing costs fell it became available to the general public in the 1990s. Ever since then it has been very popular.
The memory foam topper was the first product sold publicly, but it was not very long before the full memory foam mattress was being sold as well. Because of its unique qualities it became a best selling product. As sales climbed additional foam products were created and marketed. There are so many great foam products for sale today the buyer can often get perplexed trying to figure out the type that might be best for them. In addition, we have the latex mattress which makes deciding on a mattress even more bewildering. A buyer must read several foam and latex mattress reviews to learn the various differences.
A great deal of the uncertainty with visco memory foam is a result of the large number of densities and levels of firmness that are available. Density is the weight of a 1 cubic foot piece of foam. If a 1 cubic foot piece weighs 5 pounds it has a density of 5 pounds. Normally, if the foam is denser it will have a longer lifespan, but it will not feel as soft.
Firmness is specified as an ILD rating. ILD is short for Indentation Load Deflection and is the amount of force necessary, calculated in pounds, to cause a 1 inch indentation in the foam. Measuring ILD is accomplished by positioning a 50-inch disc on top of a section of foam that is 4 inches by 15 inches by 15 inches. The weight in pounds it takes to push the foam down a single inch is its ILD rating. If it takes 14 pounds to compress the foam down an inch its ILD rating is 14. A mattress that has a lower-numbered ILD rating is softer.
Snoozing on a standard spring bed will cause an increase in the amount of force on specific locations like the shoulders and hips. Memory foam mattresses will distribute the total body weight of a person more evenly and over a wider area. This will decrease the degree of pressure in any particular area which can result in a more relaxing sleep and less joint or back aches.
One negative aspect to this kind of mattress is its high cost as they can get quite high-priced. This is the reason why the memory foam mattress topper is so widespread, because it is a great deal cheaper than a full bed and can be placed on top of the existing bed. Unfortunately, because of their thinness they can wear out quicker. If you are unsure about spending the additional money to buy a full memory foam mattress you can start with the bed topper to see if you like it. If you are impressed with the bed topper you can always take the subsequent step and buy the full mattress.
Memory foam retains heat and is the reason why some consumers do not care for it. When someone lies on one of these foam mattresses it will initially feel rigid. Then, as soon as the body heat transfers to the foam it will start to soften, which will cause it to mold to the curves of the body. The region below the heat will stay cooler and stiffer, offering plenty of support, while the warmer region will be softer, providing more comfort. A large number of individuals with low back soreness will notice that their pain goes away from sleeping on a full memory foam mattress.
