Long Term Treatment For Drug Addiction Carries The Best Prognosis

Author : Damian Higgens

Statistics have proven that long term treatment for both drug or alcohol abuse carries the best remedy for a full recovery. Whether it’s an opiate addiction, another drug or the person is dealing with alcohol abuse, either a drug treatment center or alcohol rehab program is warranted. Interestingly enough, if there isn’t a desire for long term care in a drug treatment center or alcohol rehab program, that doesn’t have any effect on recovery. Even if the patient is against taking part in this type of rehabilitation, the programs and treatment are equally effective when working toward a sober lifestyle.

It is common knowledge and a scientific fact that it takes about 3 weeks to break a habit. Of course, that doesn’t include the 7-10 days that is needed for detoxification especially if there is an opiate addiction. Add to that the 3 weeks and already that is one month to just get the patient free from their addiction. A good drug treatment center understands this principle and realizes that much longer than one month is desirable. When an entirely different lifestyle is being promoted, the patient needs time to acclimate himself to it. This doesn’t happen overnight.

Many times, the first try for a drug or alcohol abuser is to attempt to kick the habit themselves or with the help of family. Unfortunately, statistics show that although the intentions may be well meaning, the facts are that unless the abuser enters a drug treatment center or alcohol rehab program, there is little chance of long term success.

Removing the individual from his or her environment that put them in that precarious situation in the first place is what is sorely needed. When entering into a drug treatment center or alcohol rehab program, the patient is many times at odds with what they have to accomplish; they feel overwhelmed and unable to function in that environment. After weeks, months or sometimes even years, the abuser many times ends up being a support to the new patients that come through the treatment center doors which in turn helps them stay clean as well. There is hope for those with an opiate addiction or drug habit and those suffering from alcohol abuse. There is a new life waiting for them. They can do it and with the help of those that dedicate their lives to doing this work, they will succeed.
