If you've heard about the increasing amount of identity theft that's occurring in this country, chances are you've become worried about protecting your private information. One of the best ways you can protect yourself is by using a paper shredder to shred old mail, expired credit cards, bank statements, and more. General Binding Corporation (GBC) has a wide selection of shredders and one of their least expensive models is the ShredMaster SC170 strip-cut paper shredder. Keep reading to learn about this paper shredder and then you can decide if you should get one for your home or office.
The ShredMaster SC170 is a small paper shredder that's pretty powerful, especially for being so reasonably priced. (It costs a mere $70.00.) This shredder can shred 12 pieces of paper at once. The shreds measure 1/4", so they provide a moderate level of security. (If you want a shredder with better security, a cross-cut shredder is a wise choice. GBC has several to choose from, including the ShredMaster 2260X cross-cut shredder.) The SC170 can shred credit cards for your privacy, and it can destroy staples and paper clips, as well, so if you forget to remove a fastener from your document before shredding, it's not a problem. It has a 5.5-gallon wastebasket with an integrated handle to allows for easy emptying. The waste chamber has a window so you can see how full it's getting and know when it's time to empty it.
The SC170 has a couple of other features that deserve mentioning. First, it has a built-in lock that prevents the machine from being used inappropriately. (An especially nice feature if you have kids around the house.) There's also a reverse switch which will come in handy in the event of a paper jam. But what really makes the SC170 stand out is its design. This paper shredder is small enough to fit under a desk and it's ergonomically designed so you won't have to drag the shredder out from under your desk to use it. The head of the machine is angled, so it's extremely easy to feed paper into the machine.
The SC170 is great for home users and it would a good deskside shredder in the workplace. The shredder's security level is adequate for everyday shredding needs (i.e. computer printouts, junk mail, etc.), but it's not recommended for the destruction of highly sensitive information, so keep that in mind. (As mentioned before, a cross-cut shredder would be better for that.) Also, the machine lacks casters, so some people might find the unit difficult to move around, especially when the wastebasket is full. This machine also does not do a good job in shredding CD's or DVD's. In fact, when we tried we ruined the machine.
Overall, the GBC ShredMaster SC170 is a great choice for individuals who need a paper shredder at home to get rid of old documents and expired credit cards. This machine performs well, it looks cool, and it's great that it's ergonomically friendly. For people who need a small paper shredder that's affordable, the GBC ShredMaster SC170 is definitely a good choice. However, it may be worthwhile to look at moving up to a cross cut model for a few more dollars. The added security and decreased volume of waste would probably be worth it.
If you are considering buying the GBC Shredmaster SC170 you should really check out MyBinding.com. They have a great price on this machine and carry the entire line of GBC Shredmaster Shredders.
