Being the largest privately funded, cultural institution in Washington, “Corcoran Gallery of Art” was inaugurated in 1869 by William Wilson Corcoran in order to commit to making the historic art and the emerging art of our time reachable and comprehensible to everyone through innovative exhibitions and educational programs. More over its education programs offer part-time classes for children and adults.
The Corcoran museum and college of art and design is now been functioned by its staff of 185 people and its financial out put comes from several ways such as grants and contributions, admissions fees, tuition and membership dues which bring its financial endowment currently worth about 30 million US dollars. This unique art galley offers “Highlights Tours” of its exhibits daily at noon, of which the duration is approximately 45 minutes. Theses visits are free of charge and ideal for first-time visitors to gain a basic knowledge of its distinguished art works.
Located in the heart of monumental Washington, the Corcoran is within close proximity of, fascinating restaurants, tourist attractions and elegant Washington DC hotels. And it accommodates one event per evening for 400 guests for a seated dinner and up to 1,000 for a standing reception providing exclusive access to its permanent collection and special exhibitions. The “Café des Artistes” of Corcoran Gallery offers a stylish atmosphere and full menu service set to meet the outstanding level of Washington DC hotels.
The Corcoran continues to broaden its collection to include a wide selection of works by contemporary artists. Today, the Corcoran is renowned for its collection of 20th-century painting, sculpture and photography. In total, the Corcoran's American holdings illuminate the nation's history and artistic development from colonial times through the 20th century.
