Using Pool Water For Survival Situations

Author : Lance Esondi

In a disaster situation, water becomes a very high priority because you can't go more than a few days without water. One backup option that you might have to consider is your pool water because it's difficult to store days of water as it takes up so much space.

The first consideration is if it's an above ground pool or not. If it isn't, the water can be tainted if there has been flooding in the area. Be careful with the water if it has got into the pool from run off. If it's above ground it's just your pool water plus rain.

Use pool water to flush the toilets.

If you are resorting to using pool water, then you don't have working toilets. You can take a bucket of water and fill up the tank of the toilet which will allow it to flush. This will take care of the sanitary need of using the restroom.

Use pool water for cleaning.

While pool water isn't the most clean in itself with the dirt and chlorine, it still can be used to wash up if need be. You probably won't be taking a bath or shower everyday in a survival situation but the pool water is there for that. For dishes it will work well to rinse and clean as well.

Use pool water for drinking.

You have to be very careful with this one because pool water alone isn't the safest to drink. If you keep a propane grill or portable propane stove on hand, you will be able to boil the water to help purify it. After that, it might be a good idea to still run it through a purifier and filter. This won't taste very good but it will keep you hydrated.

It is a good idea to have some other options for drinking water besides just relying on your pool. Most pools will have enough water that in a survival situation you should be able to make it last for your basic needs.
