Expand Your Cooking With Versatile Stock Pots

Author : Peter Gitundu

Stock pots are one of the most versatile pieces of cooking equipment that can be added to your home. They can be used to make stocks and to reduce stocks but also work well to cook pasta, soups, in canning and in steaming foods. If you buy a quality pot, it should last many years and work well in many types of cooking.

Pots are available in several sizes. Pots may be as small as six quarts but can be as large as twenty quarts. For an even larger stock pot you can move to the commercial pots. The stock pot needs to be larger than your soup pot. You will normally make more stock than soup and need to reduce the stock before making soup. However, there is no reason not to use the stock pot to make the soup.

Most homes do well with a stock pot that is in the range of 6 to 12 quarts. These pots are also useful for many other cooking needs. Most pots will be found with a round base and straight sides.

It is important that your stock pot has a heavy thick bottom that will prevent burning. If you plan to use the pot for sups, this is especially important. Otherwise the starches from the soup may begin to sick as the soup simmers. A thin bottomed pot can cause these starches to begin to scorch and ruin the entire pot of soup.

There are many different metals that can be used to make a stock pot. They may be made of stainless steel, cast iron, copper or aluminum. Additionally, you will find the pots in both natural finish and a non stick finish. These differences can all change the characteristic of the stock pot.

The material your pot is made of will affect its ability to transmit the heat from the burner or element of your range to the food. Some pots do an effective job at transferring heat up the side of the pot so that everything cooks evenly at both the top and bottom of the pot.

Handles need to be securely attached in order to prevent spill hazards. There should also be room to grasp the handle securely to move the pot from one spot to another while filled with boiling liquids. Look for heavy rivets or screws to hold the handle on the pot.

It may be difficult to choose the stock pot that you want to buy, but if you choose wisely, the pot can last for many years and serve your family well.
