Different Dog Names For Dachshunds Aka Weenie Dogs

Author : Beth Bridges

Do you imagine yourself watching your dachshund run Their long body flexing back and forth like a slinky. When you call out his name, it's the best name ever for a little wiener dog.

But what is that name? Here are some of the best dachshund wiener dog names from the internet, television, books, magazines, our friends, and our own experience from having owned these adorable little dogs for many years.

Don't give your dog the same name as everyone else. Use a name that is well thought out, that is unique for the Dachshund and that has meaning based on the unique characteristics of this wonderful and popular dog breed. Here are three ways to name your dachshund, followed by several examples of each.

Shape and color - Dachsunds have a unique shape and beautiful colors
Personality – Dachshunds are brave and playful
German Dog Names – Dachshunds are from Germany

No other dog can be mistaken for a Dachshund, even when seen in profile. Those stumpy legs and elongated body are unique to the dachshund. Their nickname of "hot dog" is based on their shape, but don't be obvious and call him "Oscar." Here are a couple of ideas for Dachshund names based on their shape:

Estira: In Spanish, this means "it stretches". Pronounced "Ay-steer-ah". Stirata: This means stretch in Italian. Pronounced "Steer-ah-tah". Brautwurst or Braut: This is a type of German sausage. Pronounced Brawt

There are obvious names such as "Brown Dog" but those aren't great dachshund dog names. Here are some unusual, beautiful, and imaginative variations on dachshund color:

Bister: This is a dark brown pigment extracted from wood. It's an unusual dog name that has a good sound to it}.
Citrine: This amber-colored gemstone is very rare in its natural form.
Henna: The body art of the same name is very popular. When people think you said "Hanna" you can correct them: "henna – like the body art!" And try Tawny: Again, a lighter shade of brown, but a nice name that may remind you of the 80's!

Dachshunds are part of the hound family, but there is terrier blood in their development. This creates a dog with a strong sense of purpose, but a great deal of liveliness. The AKC Kennel Club official Dachshund breed standard describes the ideal personality as:

"… clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness, persevering in above and below ground work, with all the senses well-developed."

Here are playful, strong and brave names to try on your new dachshund puppy:
Artful: Meaning crafty or sly
Chip or Chipper: A state of being upbeat or cheerful
Fireball: Could be shortened to Firey
Wizard or Whiz: A term often used for someone extremely skilled.

Since Dachshunds are of German origin, German names are great way to give a dog name which reflects that origin. These words definitely sound German – and are more uncommon that the usual Struedel and Sauerkraut while still sounding authentic.

Finster: Dark or gloomy. Use it as irony with your happiest dog.
Lieben: To love
Scheiden: To divide or separate
Schiefer: Slate (stone), shale
Vorbild: An example

In Germany and the United States, the trend is to give dogs people names. Here are some ideas of good, German people names:

Amadeus: German form of "God's love"
Falco: Used by an 80's German pop star, but also a popular name.
Königin (female dog name) Queen
Zuckert: Means "sweetie"

So be thoughtful. Your cute little dachshund friend deserves a great, memorable dog name.
