How To Avert 4 Costly Mistakes When Constructing A Bunny Rabbit Hutch

Author : Joshua Hardingur

Outside rabbits hutches are typically low-priced and simple to erect. It is possible to manufacture one in less than a day and your labors can often save you quite a bit of money over buying one. As a bonus, you will be able to manufacture it to your specifications. A good number of bunny rabbit cages that are for sale are fairly small, but by making one by hand you can offer additional space to your bunny rabbits that they will greatly benefit from.

Before beginning construction on your new bunny rabbit hutch there are a small number of vital things that need to be carefully considered. Some of might seem too evident to deserve mentioning, but a lot of amateurs are clueless when it comes to manufacturing a rabbit hutch.

Mistake #1: Not Building With Appropriate Materials

Outside Rabbits hutches are typically built from a combination of metal, wood, and wire mesh. Typically, three sides and the covering (roof) are built using wood while the fourth side and the flooring are built with an all-wire mesh. Utilizing metal for the sides is preferred since it will not rot and will be much easier to keep clean. When bunny rabbits spray urine, it can soak into wood, creating an unpleasant odor that won't occur with metal cages.

Do not use particle board to save money since it will rot and distort in moist surroundings. High quality exterior plywood is the correct material to manufacture the sides and roof with, and correctly treating the wood will increase its life. Nonetheless, do not treat wood that the bunny can nibble on as it can injure them.

A floor made from wood is unquestionably not suitable. The flooring should always be made from an all-wire mesh that will allow droppings to tumble to the ground. If rabbit droppings are not allowed to plunge beneath the wire floor they will certainly build up inside the cage and cause of filth and illness.

Mistake #2: Manufacturing a Cage that is Excessively Small

Bunnies need to be offered a chance to work out or exercise for about 4 hours each and every day. Bunnies that get plenty of daily exercise are happier, healthier, live longer lives, and are more productive if kept for meat production. For this reason they need to be given some additional space in their hutch. Offering some additional space to scurry around in will be greatly cherished.

Creating their home two levels high will provide the additional space needed for increased exercise. The upper and lower levels can be accessed with a wire ramp that permits the bunny rabbit to hop to either floor as desired. This will boost the size of their living space while not needing any more ground area in the backyard.

Mistake #3: Not Providing Them With a Sufficient Amount of Security from Poor Weather or Direct Sunlight

Bunnies need to have sunlight and fresh air, but too much direct sun or wet weather can injure or kill them. Rabbits hutches with only 1 or 2 solid sides will subject your rabbit to possibly injurious climate conditions. Strong winds, showers, and snowfall can be kept out of the cage and away from the rabbit if you erect 3 solid sides and a solid covering (roof).

Furthermore, rabbits can't bear high temperatures and must be given a shady place where they can avoid the harsh sunlight. By positioning the hutch appropriately and manufacturing it with enough protective sides, the bunny can remain relatively untouched by the weather.

Mistake #4: Not Creating a Hutch with 4 Legs

All outdoor rabbits hutches need to be set atop legs. Setting a cage directly on the soil will permit damp and unclean conditions to happen inside the cage which will be the cause of health troubles. Plus, without support legs the rabbit droppings are not able to plunge through the wire flooring, will soon lead to a waste buildup inside the cage.
