The Various Benefits Of Building A Portable Chicken Coop

Author : Joshua Hardingur

There are three varieties of housing that you can give to your chickens: movable (chicken ark), permanent (chicken coop), or none at all. Each type has unique advantages and disadvantages. It is essential to recognize that a few items must be carefully thought out before deciding on which option you will employ.

The most basic option is to simply allow your hens to run free in your yard. This will give your poultry a chance to hunt for their own food which will normally keep them healthy and thriving. On the other hand, there are three major problems with this option. First, if they obtain most of their food on their own they will not consume adequate amounts of calcium, protein, and additional nutrients to keep them laying large numbers of eggs. The end result is a smaller amount of eggs. This is solved very easily by supplying premixed feed as a supplement to their free range meals.

A second problem is that your birds will be open to attack from the weather conditions. In locations with less severe winter weather this will probably not be an insurmountable source of concern, but in places with harsh winters a safe haven is a must. The third and biggest problem when supplying no housing is predatory animals. Allowing your flock to be exposed to neighboring pets and wild animals is not smart. For this reason alone it is essential to offer some form of housing to shelter your poultry.

The two forms of coop you can choose from are movable and stationary (permanent). Permanent housing, also called a coop, will be required if you are going to raise a considerable number of birds. Chicken coops necessitate more time, cash, and labor to construct and maintain your birds. And cleaning will be a regular and unpleasant task with a permanently placed coop.

If you are planning on raising a small number of hens you can get away with a chicken ark. They are ideal for roughly 4 to 6 hens. If you wish to raise more than this number you must either put together stationary housing or multiple chicken arks. A chicken ark has lots of advantages and is easy to construct and maintain.

In view of the fact that an ark is not very large there are few supplies you will be required to purchase. This means that you will save a considerable amount of cash over putting together a larger house. It also means it will require less time to build. The most ideal arks are constructed as "A" frames with a window or two and an out-of-doors porch, but modification according to your needs is possible.

Having both an inside and outside section is the ultimate. The inside section will house the poultry nests, feeders, and water fountains, while the exterior area will be enclosed with wire making it possible for your chickens to hunt and peck for some of their own food. This is the prime benefit of a chicken ark, offering your chickens the ability to find some food on their own. This can keep your feed bills to a minimum while keeping your hens healthy.

Another advantage of a movable chicken house is the amount of time it takes to clean up. A stationary coop will require consistent cleaning while a portable chicken ark will simply need to be moved to a different spot periodically. When one location gets a little unclean you can simply transport it to a different and cleaner spot. Nature will handle the cleanup without any help from you. In addition, you will get free organic fertilizer anywhere you position your movable ark. This is perfect if you grow your own vegetables because you can easily transport the ark around the backyard garden plot to fertilize any area you want.

There are numerous rewards for manufacturing a portable chicken ark. They are cheap, painless to build, trouble-free to keep up, permit your chickens to hunt and peck for a good deal of their own food which saves you cash, supply them with a shield from predatory animals, present you with complimentary fertilizer, and are trouble-free to keep hygienic.
