Disneyland, in Anaheim, California, opened in 1955, and is the only theme park that Walt Disney directly supervised. It"s been visited by royalty, heads of state, presidents, and over 515 million guests since it opened. In 2007 alone, more than 14.8 million people visited the park; it officially became the second most visited park in the world.
"Second-most" isn"t good enough for Disneyland, though. Over the past several years, they"ve either added new rides and attractions or rebuilt old ones in such a way that they might as well be new. However, since new rides are huge and expensive undertakings, Disneyland only renovates or opens a new one every few years. Here are a few of the highlights from 2000 - 2009:
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters - This is a surprisingly good ride, especially if you and your kids are video gamers; even waiting in line is entertaining. Here, you get the chance to join Buzz Lightyear in an intergalactic battle against the Evil Emperor Zurg. Fire hand-held laser cannons, blast enemy targets and climb up the ranks of Space Rangers!
One car seats two people and has two blasters. As you ride through the themed areas, you can blast different targets while a LED display keeps track of your score. Once the ride is over, find your ranking based on your score. You may just find yourself coming back for more!
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage - One of the renovations, the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage used to be just the "Submarine Voyage". Now, the ride is one of the more popular ones, remade to fit the theme from Finding Nemo. Here, you get the change to experience being fully submerged underwater, see beautiful coral reefs, view a shipwreck, feel the eruption from an underwater volcano and listen to the fish talk. This is a fantastic adventure for kids of all ages.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - In small Critter Country, you"ll find Winnie the Pooh and his friends, trying to - what else? - steal honey. The ride takes you through the Hundred Acre Wood, where the storybook characters come to life, including Pooh"s dream Heffalumps and Woozles. Although the ride was meant for small children and is less than 3 minutes long, kids and adults alike have rated the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh a "must see".
Mr. Lincoln Returns to Main Street U.S.A. - Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, Disneyland"s "most patriotic attraction" was closed for restorations. The famous Audio-Animatronics Abraham Lincoln is now fully restored, with new technology and artwork, and is a "can"t miss" experience. Journey through American History with Abraham Lincoln - new technology has given him more emotion and vitality. It"s not hard to believe that the former President is standing in front of you.
Indiana Jones Adventure - Although the Indiana Jones Adventure is fairly new, it became an instant classic for adults and kids. The ride is rough, it"s bumpy, and it"s perfect for anyone who ever dreamed of being the dashy, rude, adventuresome archeologist. It"s 1935, Indiana Jones is by your side and you have to find the legendary Temple of the Forbidden Eye. On the way, you"ll have to escape the terrible deity, Mara, watch out for poisonous darts, swarming rats and giant insects to gain earthly riches, eternal youth and future knowledge. It"s classic Indiana Jones, and classic Disneyland fun!
It"s Disneyland, where storybook characters come to life on a daily basis and dreams really can come true. But - it"s also Disneyland, home to over 58 rides, exhibits and shows. No matter where you go in the park, there"s always something fun to do!
