Let me make this as clear as I can. All chicken plans are not made equal. You may think that a chicken shed, chicken tractor, and chicken ark are all the same, but they are most definitely not. There are key differences between them that must be understood previous to starting construction.
If you're raising many hens you'll in all probability be building a sizable stationary poultry shed. However, if you want to raise a few birds in your yard to supply eggs and meat for you and your family you'll perhaps want a transportable chicken coop, also known as a chicken ark. By building it as a portable unit you will be able to save some cash on food while maintaining healthier chickens. Plus, putting together a diminutive chicken ark will be less of a problem and cheaper than a large hen house.
Portable chicken houses have quite a few advantages over bigger hen houses, with one being their portability. If you erect a sizeable stationary chicken coop it will be almost impossible to move. The house portion will basically have a wooden floor, interior poultry nests, water, and a feeder. The exterior part will use chicken wire for the walls and ceiling, but will employ the earth as the flooring.
Your small flock of chickens will be able to move indoors or out at their inclination through a small opening in the wood house. They will be able to eat prepackaged feed or lay eggs inside the wood house, or hunt and scratch for food outdoors. Giving them a chance to rove outdoors for some of their diet will assist you in keeping feed bills to a minimum. It will also keep the flock in better health.
Whatever you do, do not let your flock get 100% of their diet on their own. If they are allowed to munch on too many plants and grasses at the expense of a high protein feed, they will become inefficient when laying eggs is concerned. The only way to get the utmost production is to make sure they get an adequate amount of protein, calcium, and other nutrients in their diet. And they will not be able to get what they require on their own. You will not end up short on eggs if their feeder stays full of a healthy feed.
The best feature with regard to arks is that they are transportable. Once your flock of chickens have eaten all that is available in one location you can simply transport them to another area. You can situate the ark in your backyard garden if desired, which will award you high quality manure at no additional charge.
One other bonus of a transportable chicken ark is that cleaning up is simple. Larger coops ought to be cleaned out often, but transportable housing can be moved to new places when one area becomes unusable.
