Installing air conditioning systems in older buildings present a wide array of unique challenges. It is very possible to install a quality air conditioning system in an older building, but it will be very difficult, and generally a bit more costly than a equivalent air conditioning system in a newer building. Generally, however, it is a better financial decision to install an air conditioning system in an older building than to renovate the older building. Additionally, keeping the older building in its original condition will maintain its nostalgia and historic characteristics.
Many older buildings were built before air conditioning was considered a necessary component, let alone in widespread use. Therefore, many of the older buildings are set up in an extremely inefficient manner for air conditioning systems to be installed and functional. The walls are generally very thick and the insulation of the buildings is generally not as good as insulation in newer buildings. However, do not let these obstacles derail you from installing an air conditioning system in an older building. Installation of an air conditioning system in an older building can rejuvenate the building, bring new people to the building, and allow the building to maintain its historic charm. The rewards that will be reaped after the installation of the air conditioning system will be well worth the hassle.
Before installing an air conditioning system into an older building, it is advised that several contractors be called out to look at the building. Not all air conditioning contractors have worked with older buildings. Given the unique challenges that an installation team will face when installing the air conditioning system, it is highly advisable that an air conditioning installation team with experience installing air conditioning systems in older buildings be hired for this type of job. In many cases, it is not worth the extra cost of bringing in a specialist to install an air conditioning system. However, this is not the case with air conditioning in older buildings, especially when as much of the structure of the building is to remain intact as possible. Many contractors believe that the best way to install air conditioning in an older building is to simply remodel the building and install an air conditioning system in the process of the renovation. While this might be what you want to do with your older building, it is not the only option. If you want to keep the integrity of your older building and simply upgrade it with some air conditioning, be sure to seek the assistance of a specialist with experience.
Like with any other air conditioning system, consider the needs of your older building before choosing which air conditioning system that you will have installed. Your contractor should be able to go over all of the different options that are available to you. Be certain that you have gone over all of the positives and negatives of each individual system before you choose the perfect one for your older building.
